Together we make a difference - Mark, Environment and Sustainability Project Officer

Mark is our Environment & Sustainability Officer, leading and coordinating climate change initiatives across the council and borough. He works closely with teams across the council and external partners to drive projects that support Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s target to be carbon neutral by 2035. This includes securing government funding, delivering sustainability initiatives, and helping the organisation and community reduce their environmental impact for the benefit of future generations.

Mark has been instrumental in helping the council reduce its operational emissions by 19% between 2020 and 2025, developing successive Climate Change Action Plans that support our net-zero target. He also led the creation of our new Green Your Home Guide, an easy‑to‑use resource that helps households understand how to save energy and make environmentally friendly choices.

Mark’s role has involved:

  • Coordinating improvements to council buildings to make them more energy efficient, including lighting upgrades, solar panel installation and low‑carbon heating projects.
  • Working with Operations, Facilities, Countryside and other teams to identify opportunities to reduce fuel use, switch to electric vehicles, increase tree cover and cut emissions across day‑to‑day operations.
  • Partnering with other organisations and networks to share best practice and secure funding for sustainability projects that support both the council and the wider community.

Mark explained what drives him:

“Protecting our borough’s environment matters to everyone — and I’m proud that my role lets me make a real difference. I help tackle climate change and shape wider projects that support our ambition to become carbon neutral. Not only are we making our services more energy efficient, but we’re also helping our community influence their own environment — protecting and enhancing it for future generations to enjoy.

Seeing the progress we’ve made — from installing public electric charging points to adding solar panels to our buildings — is incredibly rewarding and I’m proud to play a part in it.

What drives me is knowing that every improvement, big or small, contributes to a greener, healthier borough. Being part of a team that genuinely wants to make a difference is inspiring — and it’s exactly where I want to be.”
