Together, we make a difference

Susan, our Museum Curator manages Bourne Hall Museum. At the museum visitors can see interesting objects from the past and discover stories about the history of the borough. Susan manages a small team of staff and volunteers who document and care for the museum collections. The team answer many enquiries about the history of the borough with the help of the collections, they also   provide object loan boxes to schools and community groups, run a monthly Kids Club and arrange activities that aim to bring the collections in the museum to life for visitors. The museum is proud to be home to a wonderful collection of objects that tell stories of the history of the borough, not least collections associated with the nationally important Stane Street (Roman Road), Epsom Salts and Epsom Races (e.g. Suffragettes).

Bourne Hall is staffed by a fantastic and enthusiastic team who make everyone welcome and the museum is a core part of the experience at Bourne Hall. Bourne Hall also offers room hire, a community theatre, the Flying Saucer café and local library.

Speaking of a recent highlight in her role, Susan says,

“(It was) amazing (to discover) the Roman coins and early wallpaper (late 17th century) we have in the collections. For the former we have been fortunate enough to gain a grant for a high-quality exhibition case so that we can have a good selection of Roman coins on display for the first time.”

When we asked Susan what her team are brilliant at, she said,

“Research and public engagement: we get many enquiries from the public about local history and photographic evidence of particular events or dates, and we are able to interrogate the collections database to find the information to answer them. We arrange a number of events and activities and I was so pleased that so many people came along to the walks and talks for the Heritage Open Days in September.”
