Epsom Common, essential work
Epsom Common is a site of special scientific interest and is designated a local nature reserve, both status give various protections to this much loved green space.
However the area has not always had this level of protection.
Back in the early 1940's, an essential service pipeline was laid under the Common. This runs under some of the main pathways. In the 1970's the pipeline was renewed and is inspected.
The operator has recently advised us that where our vehicles cross the pipeline it could be damaged. As a precautionary measure we are therefore strengthening the paths where they cross the service pipeline.
This will be undertaken over the next few months.
Unfortunately due to the nature of the work some paths will have to be closed and, while there will be diversions, these may be a little bit rougher than the main paths (eg grass tracks). The Stew Pond car park will also have to be closed for a period.
We apologise for the inconvenience but the work is important to protect the Common and we have timed the activity so that it takes the least amount of time and takes place outside the main summer holiday period.
