The Council has officially opened the refurbished and extended Gatley Avenue Children’s Playground, which includes new play equipment specifically for toddlers and young children.
Following consultation with local residents and users of the original playground, a zip-wire, a trampoline, climbing equipment, swings and a slide amongst other pieces of equipment have been included in the new playground.
Opening the playground, Councillor Jan Mason, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Committee, said “Play has tremendous benefits for children. It helps them to build confidence and self-esteem, regulates their emotions, develops decision-making power and problem-solving and enhances teamwork skills. The long-term physical health benefits are very real too. I’m proud of the £100k investment we have made in the refurbishment and extension of this playground. For a project of this size, getting the funding is only half the job. So I would like to thank the people and teams who have all contributed in some way to making this project such a success, not least to the local residents who took time to take part in the original consultation”.
At the opening, resident Jo Leach said, “This a vast improvement on what was here before, and allows the children to play and exercise in the fresh air”. Fellow resident Michelle Driver added “This is the best children’s playground in the area”.
Holly Igglesden contacted the Council and said “I took my niece to the new Gatley Avenue outdoor playground in West Ewell recently and just wanted to say thank you and how wonderful it is! She absolutely loved it and ran around saying how cool everything was (she is three). It was very exciting to see the trampoline and the 'big slide' on the hill. We are very lucky to live in such a lovely area with such exciting, free, outdoor space”.
The playground is located in Gatley Avenue, West Ewell, KT19 9NE and backs onto the Hogsmill Local Nature Reserve.
