Welcome to the August issue of e-Borough Insight.

One of the key priorities of the Council is the promotion of healthy lifestyles, particularly in the young and those over fifty. In Surrey 40% of adults do not achieve the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendations of 150 minutes’ physical activity per week. People tend to be less active as they get older but by increasing physical activity many conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, joint problems and obesity can be prevented and managed. Being active can also lower the risk of Alzheimer's, improve symptoms of depression, reduce stress and prevent or manage osteoporosis, falls and hypertension. In this month’s Spotlight section, we highlight an initiative with Active Surrey and local sports clubs to introduce physical activities that the over 50’s may not have tried before.

One way of increasing physical activity is to go for a walk, so the news that the borough’s green spaces have just received the UK’s highest accolade for excellence is timely.  And if you want to try a truly magnificent local walk, why not try the 20 miles, predominately off road, Round the Borough Hike?   

On a totally different subject, the last few months have been one of the most extraordinary periods in politics, nationally and internationally. This month we launch the Borough’s annual canvas. This is the foundation of your participation in the political decision making process, ensuring that you can take part in elections and referendums, so that your views are taken into account.
