Eat safe this summer
We all love it when the weather gets warmer. But did you know that you might need to think harder about food safety in the summer months?
Our Environmental Health Team have got together with the Food Standards Agency to help promote good food safety this summer and have produced a couple of guides for you to download:
New research indicates that people in this area could be putting themselves and their families at risk of food poisoning through lack of knowledge of the 4Cs of food hygiene: Chilling, Cooking, Cleaning and avoiding Cross-contamination.
The 4Cs of summer food safety
The Food Standards Agency’s Food and You Survey, which collects information on food safety through 3,118 interviews across UK, found that in the South East:
- people were the most likely to say they eat burgers that are pink or have pink juices at least some of the time - guidelines recommend that they should be fully cooked before eating.
- 54% of residents knew that a fridge should be kept between 0°C and 5°C but 45% did not check their fridge temperature regularly.
- 45% of people in the South East defrost meat or fish at room temperature despite recommendations to defrost meat or fish in the fridge or in the microwave.
- a quarter of people in do not change or clean their chopping boards between different foods.
- 21% always washed raw chicken - washing chicken risks spreading bacteria and should be avoided.
