Autumn in Epsom and Ewell

This month has been an emotional time for many people. Hopefully by now you have had a chance to reflect on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her life and legacy.

The Surrey History Centre, is inviting Surrey residents to share their memories of her reign, particularly her time spent in Surrey.

Surrey History Centre is the county archive. They preserve records stretching back to the 12th century to tell the story of Surrey's past and present. To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's reign, they are inviting residents to contribute photographs or memories relating to her visits to the county, whether images taken by yourself at an official engagement, your Jubilee celebrations or your account of a personal encounter with the Queen. If you have anything you would like to donate to the archive, please get in touch: shs@surreycc.gov.uk.

Grow Your Business Show Success

Epsom Embraces Business Networking on a Grand Scale!

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council (EEBC) and Epsom and Ewell Employment Hub (delivered by Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership) met with more than 45 local businesses at the ‘Grow Your Business Show’ Event, which took place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on the 22 September 2022.

Representatives from a huge range of council services dropped in to the EEBC stand to meet and advise businesses on how the council can assist them.

EEBC were delighted to be sponsors of this event - and what more fitting and suitable venue to bring Surrey businesses to than Epsom’s Jockey Club.

The team from Epsom & Ewell Borough Council hugely enjoyed meeting so many local businesses at the event and seeing businesses from all over Surrey getting together to network and collaborate.

Grow your business show 2022

The EEBC stand showcased the wide range of business services available to every business in the Borough, see the dedicated page on the EEBC website for more information.

Thank you to the show organisers and attendees for making it such a successful event.

Help secure funding to repair the historic buildings in Nonsuch Park

You can help secure funding to repair the beautiful historic buildings in Nonsuch Park.

Nonsuch Buildings Aug 22

The London Borough of Sutton has launched a consultation into its Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Fund and visitors to the Park are encouraged to give their view, even if they are not a resident of the London Borough of Sutton.

The cost of repairing the roof sections over the museum, Mansion House and public toilet has made it on to the London Borough of Sutton’s list of projects which may receive funding.

Sutton share management of Nonsuch Park with Epsom & Ewell Borough Council. If successful, it would mean that Sutton would provide funding of £44,000, sharing equally the estimated cost of roof works.

Please lend your support to the Nonsuch Park roof repair project by filling out the survey. Whether you live nearby, or visit Nonsuch Park, your support will count! You can choose which project to support by filling in the online questionnaire.

The Nonsuch project is located in the Longlist Project Submissions for Sutton South, Cheam & Belmont.

Annual Canvass Launched

The Annual Canvass

Image for 2022 electoral canvass

Every year Epsom and Ewell Borough Council is required by law to contact each household in the Borough to find out if there have been any changes to who is eligible to be registered to vote at each address. We'll be contacting households again from August until November.

This year, we'll continue to implement the changes to the way the annual canvass is held following the implementation of The Representation of the People (Annual Canvass)(Amendment) Regulations 2019. We will be contacting residents by email and telephone as well as sending out canvass communications in the post.

Your household will receive one or more of the below:

  • A confirmation letter on green paper sent by post. You will be asked to check the names of people living at your address. You only need to respond if you need to make a change or update the information printed on the letter.
  • A canvass form sent on yellow paper by post. This form will ask you to confirm who is currently eligible to vote in your household. By law, you must respond to this form and provide the information requested.
  • An email communication in relation to the above if you have previously provided an email address to Electoral Services – expected to have been sent on or around 1 August.

How to respond

To confirm or update the details for your household:

If you are asked to respond to a canvass communication and don’t, we will make other attempts to get a response from you, which may include reminder forms, calling you on the telephone or a visit to your property, so please respond as soon as you receive the information request from us.

If you have any questions about how to respond to the letter, form or email you have received, please email electoralservices@epsom-ewell.gov.uk(link sends e-mail).

Unsubscribe from emails

If you want to unsubscribe from getting the annual canvass communication by email then please email your request including your full name and address to: unsubscribecanvass@epsom-ewell.gov.uk(link sends e-mail)

Please note that there is a criminal penalty for failing to provide the information required when requested to do so by the Electoral Registration Officer of a maximum of £1,000. The penalty for providing false information to an Electoral Registration Officer is imprisonment of up to 51 weeks or, (on summary conviction) an unlimited fine.

Will returning the form register me to vote?

No, adding your name to your canvass response will not register you to vote. Voter registration is a separate process and once you have told us you need to register we will send information either by email or post to each unregistered person at your property giving information on how to register. You do not need to wait for this information, you can register via the national voter registration website www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

The two versions of the register

The Electoral Registration Officer makes and keeps two versions of the electoral register.

  • The full register - This lists everyone who is entitled to vote. This is the register that is used for running elections and for other specified uses as prescribed by law (contact Electoral Services for more information). The full register is a public document and it can be inspected by anyone. The full register is not available on the internet, it is in paper format only and any inspection of the register must be done under supervision. It is held at the Town Hall and if you wish to look at the full register, please contact Electoral Services to arrange an appointment.
  • The open register – This version can be bought by anyone and used for any purpose such as putting your personal details on the Internet and mail marketing. Being on the open register is optional so if you do not want your details sold on you can say NO. The open register is also held at the Town Hall, please contact electoralservices@epsom-ewell.gov.uk(link sends e-mail) to arrange an appointment.

Want to come off the open register?

If your details are on the open register and you wish them to come off then you can ask for them to be removed. Contact electoral services by email, giving your name and address to electoralservices@epsom-ewell.gov.uk(link sends e-mail) or by phoning the helpline 01372 732120 or 732152. You can also go back onto the open register by requesting to do so in writing.

Checking the new register

The new register will be published on 1 December 2022 and can be checked after that date at the Town Hall.
The new register will be used to run any elections that may be held in 2023.

Please note: You are not automatically registered to vote by registering to pay Council Tax. This is because you may be eligible to pay Council Tax but not be eligible to vote. You should also be aware that not registering to vote can affect your credit history.

Need more help?

If you need more advice, please contact electoral services at the Town Hall, The Parade, Epsom Surrey, KT18 5BY Tel: 01372 732120 or 732152 or email: electoralservices@epsom-ewell.gov.uk(link sends e-mail)

Your personal information

We will only use the information you give us for electoral purposes. We will look after personal information securely and we will follow the Data Protection Act 1998. We will not give personal information about you and the other people in your household to anyone else or another organisation unless we have to by law.

Thank you for your support on the Epsom Town Centre Masterplan

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council held a 6 week public consultation between Monday 25 July and 31st August giving residents, workers, business owners and visitors the chance to help shape a new “masterplan” for Epsom town centre.

We heard from just under 2000 people - many people for the first time. In fact, just over half of the people who completed the survey said they'd never responded to a planning consultation before.

thank you image

Thank you so much to everyone who took part, and those who helped us design the consultation such as Epsom Civic Society. The masterplan will form part of the draft local plan, which we will also be asking for your views on soon.

Epsom & Ewell Mayor signs anti-social behaviour pledge

Councillor Clive Woodbridge, Mayor of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council has signed an Anti-Social Behaviour Pledge which commits the council to supporting victims of anti-social behaviour.

The pledge is a set of principles put forward by the victims’ charity ASB Help. ASB Help have previously assisted the Community Safety Partnership on complex community trigger applications.

A community trigger can be activated if an incident has been reported three or more times within a six month period and not received a satisfactory response. This gives the victim the right to demand that agencies deal with persistent anti-social behaviour.

The pledge’s aims are as follows:

  • Promote awareness - Actively encourage the use of the community trigger to residents and partner agencies.
  • Legality - Confirm an organisation is legally compliant and embracing the spirit of the community trigger.
  • Ensure accessibility - Publicise the community trigger so the most vulnerable know what it is and how to invoke it.
  • Develop the process - Embrace the full potential of the community trigger by continually reviewing and learning from best practice.
  • Generate inclusivity - Use community trigger review meetings to work collaboratively and strategically, formulating solutions to end the anti-social behaviour.
  • Establish a precedent of using the community trigger to put victims first and deter perpetrators.

Cllr Clive Woodbridge, Mayor of EEBC signing ASB pledge

Councillor John Beckett, Chair of the Environment and Safe Communities Committee, said “Anti-Social behaviour is not welcome in Epsom & Ewell and we work hard with partner agencies to both reduce and prevent it. Anti-social behaviour can be anything from neighbourhood issues and noise nuisance to tall vegetation, bonfires, fly tipping and inconsiderate parking.

“I would like to reassure victims of any sort of anti-social behaviour that we are there to support them. Signing this pledge is a reminder for us as a council and for our partners in the Community Safety Partnership to work more closely with ASB Help and ensure victims are effectively assisted.”
