Upper Mill & Horse Pond Repairs

Upper Mill & Horse Pond Repairs

We'll be working on Upper Mill Pond and Horse Pond in Ewell in July for approximately two months to prevent flooding of pathways that has been preventing pedestrian access and causing road damage.

The works on Upper Mill Pond will include the installation of large scale sheet piling to the banks and will involve temporary closures of pathways and access to Bourne Hall Park.

The Horse Pond will be repaired following the damage from leaks that caused the sink hole to appear in the road. Works will include removing silt and repairing the perimeter walls, removing weir and alterations and repairs to the structure.

There will be a need to fell a mature leaning Ash tree by the pond, prior to commencement of the bank repair works due to concerns over its future biomechanical structure and progression of Ash dieback.

Monitoring for disease will continue of the remaining Ash trees between the Horse Pond and Upper Mill and additional trees may require removal on completion of the project. Replacement native tree planting will be undertaken to provide at least two replacement trees for each tree lost on site during this project.

Desilting the Horse Pond will benefit the ecology of the pond by removing the build up of organic matter on the bed of the pond, thereby lowering nutrients in the water and reducing the chance of algal blooms which starve the pond of oxygen and affect the wildlife.

Although there will be temporary inconvenience whilst these major works are underway, once completed, the works will benefit the area ecologically and aesthetically.
