Annual Canvass
Each year, by law, we have to conduct an annual canvass of the borough in order to update the electoral register. 
As part of this we must contact every home to find out if there are any changes to the household so we can remove the details of people who no longer live there and invite new occupants to register individually.
During the canvass period, we will:
- deliver a form to all homes within the borough - this went out during August.
- deliver a reminder to properties who do not respond
- send canvassers to properties to encourage residents to complete the forms ( this is usually in the evenings or at weekend to ensure that we can reach as many residents as possible) - all canvassers will have proof of identity
- encourage people who have never registered or who have recently moved to register to vote at their current address
With local borough council elections taking place in Epsom and Ewell in May 2019, this is an important opportunity for you to ensure you can take part. If your name is not on the electoral register, you won't be able to vote in any elections or referendums (Brexit #2, anyone?)!
People who have moved address recently are particularly encouraged to keep an eye out for the form and check the details. Research by the independent Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those that have lived at the same address for a long time. Across Great Britain, 94% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered, compared to 40% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.
You must register each time you move. Paying council tax does not mean you are automatically added to the Register of Electors.
Please remember that you are required by law to complete and return the form, even if you are not eligible to vote in the UK, or if you are already registered and are on the register. Failure to return the completed form is an offence, which could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
