Deaf Awareness Week

Deaf awareness weekIt is currently National Deaf Awareness Week.

Some Facts

  • 1 in 6 People in the UK are deaf or hard of hearing
  • More than 45,000 children in the UK are deaf
  • About 2 million people in the UK have hearing aids
  • Nearly 3.7 million people of working age have hearing loss, 135,000 of them are severely or profoundly deaf
  • Adults and children who are deaf or hard of hearing face communication barriers.

Epsom & Ewell Borough Council have demonstrated commitment to improving access to their services for customers who are deaf or have a hearing loss by gaining Louder Than Words accreditation. This is a nationally recognised best practice charter for organisations striving to offer excellent levels of customer service and accessibility for customers and employees who have a hearing impairment.

National Deaf Awareness Week is a chance to share equality in communication for all. Things to remember when meeting a deaf person:

  • Face the person while you are speaking, don’t turn away
  • Speak clearly without shouting
  • Repeat yourself if necessary
  • Never say ‘It doesn’t matter’
  • If the person doesn’t understand you, don’t give up!
  • Write it down or draw a picture.

The Council's Customer Services department is responsible for providing first line support to Council customers and services include a text service. The Town Hall has an Induction Loop System in public areas and this helps hearing aid users to hear sounds more clearly because it reduces or cuts out background noise.
