  • Recycling week logoRecycled plastic bottles can be turned into all kinds of things – even fleece jackets!
    It takes 25 recycled drinks bottles to make a fleece jacket.

  • Every household uses approximately 600 steel cans a year
    All steel cans contain up to 25% recycled steel.

  • 25,000 plastic bottles weigh one tonne
    Recycling 1 tonne of plastic bottles saves 1.5 tonne of carbon.

  • 75% of the aluminium ever made is still in productive use today 
    The UK produces over 9 billion drinks cans every year, 80% are made of aluminium.

  • In the UK, aluminium drinks cans can be recycled, made into new cans, filled and put back on the shelf in just six weeks
    In a whole year, an individual drinks can could be recycled eight times.

  • PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the most commonly used polymer in UK plastic packaging
    PET is the most widely recycled plastic in the world.

  • Steel is the most recycled metal in the UK 
    All steel cans are 100% recyclable - they can be recycled over and over again, into anything from cars and bicycles to more steel cans.

  • It takes 75% less energy to make a plastic bottle from recycled plastic compared with using ‘virgin’ materials
    50% of the UK’s plastic drinks bottles are now recycled.

  • The PET bottle was patented in 1973 by chemist Nathaniel Wyeth
    The first PET bottle was recycled in 1977.
