The Butterfly Appeal closes

In 1991, Roy Richmond MBE and his wife Nancy set up the Mid Surrey Palliative Care Trust Fund - known to all as The Butterfly Appeal.

Our events have certainly helped add to the vibrant atmosphere in Epsom and Ewell, with our Picnic in the Park at Bourne Hall, Glory of Christmas concerts at Epsom Playhouse, the 10K run around the Borough and numerous events in and around the town centre and market place.

After 25 years of fundraising, the charity has achieved and surpassed the goals it set out to achieve. We built the family accommodation building at West Park Hospital and helped Macmillan Cancer Support to build and furnish the Macmillan Butterfly Centre at Epsom General Hospital.

In addition to this, we have helped provide a home visit nurse for Princess Alice Hospice, Esher and four Macmillan Butterfly Nurses based at Epsom & St Helier Hospitals. We also worked in partnership with Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust to trial a specialized Physiotherapist and dietician for cancer patients to aid in their rehabilitation following diagnosis and treatment. This is a unique service and following our discussions on where to help following our closure, we are donating funds to help keep this service running for another two years.

We would like to give our enormous thanks to the people of Epsom & Ewell who have helped us raise over £250,000 of which £170,000 has been directly from our own efforts, proving how generous the local residents are and the support they have shown us.

We'd also like to thank our Trustees and volunteers, including June Bird, Helen Russell-Brain, Cllr George Crawford and John Howick, who without their time would not have helped us make the difference.

All this couldn't have been possible without the generosity and patience of local and national businesses including - The Mall Ashley Centre Management Team; All the stores in the Ashley Centre; Epsom Coaches; British Airways; Monarch Airlines; National Counties Building Society; Sainsbury plc, Kiln Lane; World of Transport Travel, Twickenham and Avonedge Electrical

So thank you to everyone for all their support over the years!

The Trustees,
Richard Harris, Nancy Richmond, Dr. Lydia Jones and Lea Thomas
