Epsom & Ewell commemorate Remembrance and Armistice days

We were proud to join with residents, Royal British Legion and others from around the community to carry out formal Acts of Remembrance around the borough to commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

Garden of Remembrance: Wednesday 5 November

The Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, the Deputy Chief Executive of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and local schoolchildren came together to officially open The Garden of Remembrance at Bourne Hall - a peaceful space for reflection and tribute which is now open to the public until the end of November.

The event included poems and songs from pupils of St Christopher's School & Nursery, St Clement's Catholic Primary School, Ewell Grove Primary and Nursery School, Ewell Castle School, and Little Downsend School and Nursery. Following the event in Bourne Hall, poppy tokens were placed in the Garden of Remembrance in Bourne Hall Park.

Remembrance Sunday: 9 November

The Mayor of Epsom & Ewell laid two wreaths at the War Memorials in Ashley Road, Epsom and followed the Remembrance Day procession from the Army Reserve Centre at Welbeck which was followed by an Act of Remembrance service, wreath laying and a church service.

Armistice Day Service (11/11/11): Tuesday 11 November

The Mayor of Epsom & Ewell was joined by the Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, Chief Executive and other representatives from Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, councillors, Helen Maguire MP and members of the police and armed forces in a moving procession to Epsom Market Place. Local school children also helped us mark Armistice Day.

Other Remembrance and Armistice activities included the following.
  • The Dementia Hub, providing specialist respite care for people living with dementia and memory loss, produced some beautiful artworks.
  • One of our residents kindly provided some beautiful knitted poppies.
  • Large poppies, kindly donated by the Royal British Legion, are being placed in Epsom High Street, Ewell High Street and Stoneleigh Broadway alongside other poppies placed around the borough.
  • Bourne Hall and Epsom Playhouse held events that took place.

Thanks to everyone who helped organise events, to those involved in the events themselves and to those residents who managed to join us to commemorate formal Acts of Remembrance.
