Councillor Steve Bridger and David Gullen Recently, Councillor Steve Bridger, Mayor of Epsom & Ewell was invited to join 5k Your Way, Move Against Cancer at Nonsuch Park for their 600th parkrun event.

5k Your Way is set up and managed by the MOVE Against Cancer charity and has a strong partnership with parkrun. The charity has over ninety 5k Your Way groups run by volunteers all over the UK and Ireland.

The goal of Move Against Cancer is to help inspire and empower people impacted by cancer to live an active and fulfilling lifestyle. The Nonsuch Park group meets on the last Saturday of each month for people to run, walk, talk and have a cuppa. The group is open to anyone affected by cancer, patients, family, friends, healthcare professionals.

Councillor Steve Bridger, Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, said:

“I was honoured to join 5K Your Way ambassadors for their celebration at Nonsuch Parkrun.

“I had a wonderful morning. The camaraderie, positivity and inclusive nature of the event felt truly heartwarming. I hope anyone with an interest in walking, running, volunteering or just cheering people on won’t hesitate to go down one Saturday morning and give it a go.”

5k Your Way ambassador David Gullen was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2020 and given a five years to live. Taking part in the parkrun has not only helped with his physical and mental health benefits, but been an opportunity to connect with others who are or have been affected by cancer.

David said:

“Cancer changes everything, it has changed me in profound ways. I’d never claim what I’ve been through was worse than anything anyone else has endured. Physical and emotional pain bind us together and, in that way at least, they make us stronger. Parkrun and the 5K Your Way group have had a big impact on my life.

“Running has not only helped me regain physical health, it’s helped me recover my self[1]esteem and a sense of optimism. Once again I wake up anticipating the day and go to sleep looking forward to tomorrow. For a long time that was not true.”
